Rewrite one FYI so non-action is obvious
FYIs that sound like asks create false urgency. People waste cycles deciding whether to act.
FYIs that sound like asks create false urgency. People waste cycles deciding whether to act.
This hack: ten minutes, rewrite one FYI so "no action needed" is unmistakable - or turn it into a real ask if it was fake-FYI.
When to use it
- You are about to send an FYI (or just received a muddy one you'll forward).
- Recipients are busy operators.
- Clarity beats covering yourself with CC theater.
When not to
- It is actually an ask. Label it an ask.
- Compliance requires a formal notice template. Use that.
- You are rewriting someone else's FYI to be passive-aggressive. Don't.
Do this (timer on)
- 1. Paste the muddy FYI.
- 2. Decide: true FYI or hidden ask.
- 3. Rewrite with the prompt.
- 4. Send with a clear subject tag: FYI - no action or ACTION needed.
Prompt (copy)
Rewrite this message.
If it is a true FYI: lead with "No action needed." Then 3-5 lines of context. End with where to find more.
If it is actually an ask: say "Action needed by [date]:" and one clear ask.
Do not add urgency that is not in the source.
